Start by making the meatballs. Place the ground beef, ground pork, and ground veal in a large bowl. Add the Parmesan cheese, bread crumbs, fresh parsley, red pepper flakes, salt, minced garlic, and eggs.
Mix everything together with your hands until just combined. You do not want to overwork the meat or your meatballs will come out tough and dense.
Form the meatball mixture into evenly sized balls and place them on a sheet tray. Preheat your oven to 350 F and bake the meatballs for 30 minutes. Baking them on a sheet tray is a game changer because you get even cooking on every meatball without having to babysit a pan on the stove.
While the meatballs are baking, heat your tomato sauce in a pot over medium heat. Once the meatballs come out of the oven, transfer them directly into the sauce. Let them cook in the sauce for about 15 minutes so they soak up all that flavor. If you have the time, you can let them simmer in the sauce all day and they will only get better.
Now for the bread boat. Take your Italian loaf and cut it in half lengthwise. Scoop out some of the bread from the inside to create a well for the meatballs to sit in. You want enough room so the meatballs nestle in without rolling off.
Place the meatballs into the hollowed out bread boat. Spoon some of the sauce over the top. Sprinkle a generous amount of Parmesan cheese over the meatballs, then layer the provolone slices on top to cover everything.
Set your oven to broil and place the bread boat under the broiler for about 3 minutes. Keep an eye on it — you want the provolone to be fully melted and golden brown on top. Once it hits that perfect golden color, pull it out.
Slice the bread boat into serving sizes, garnish with fresh parsley, and enjoy. Serve hot and enjoy!
